DIY Holiday place cards // Rosemary mini wreaths
Thursday, December 12, 2013
My dad and brother have been growing their green thumbs with a family garden where we have a ton of vegetables – eggplants, bell peppers, peas, lettuce, chili peppers, 2 types of tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers, green onions, rosemary, and more that is yet to bud. I guess that’s the good thing about Hawaii – you can pretty much grow these veggies year ’round!
Now, let me tell you about our rosemary. It is huge. I mean, huge. That thing grows out of control. Well, my mom heard that rosemary gets rid of bugs + insects like cockroaches, so she literally has sachets and cups of rosemary around the entire house (and I think it works!). I mean, why not make use of the thing? It smells amazing! Open up any drawer or cabinet and you’ll find sprigs of rosemary there. Plus, she makes it into mini bouquets that smell divine. Anyway, how could I not be inspired by this herb when I was literally surrounded by it? It’s the holiday season and of course, we all love fir trees and wreaths! But I thought that rosemary would make for a great wreath place card idea! A perfect smell to accompany your meal. And when you’re done with it, it makes a great decoration piece to put on your fridge (it dries wonderfully!)
. . .
Supplies
// Pen + ink (I used calligraphy, but you don’t have to)
// Black card stock (or color of your choice) and translucent visual bond paper
// Raffia (or twine)
// Rosemary branches (or sub fir branches from your Christmas tree)
// Scissors
// Nylon thread
// Gold wrapped wire braid (or any sort of wire)
// Mini hole puncher
Create the mini wreath circle base with the gold wrapped wire. Using the nylon thread, attach the rosemary branches to the gold wrapped wire, overlapping where necessary. Have fun with it and be creative – I created full wreaths and half wreaths!

I have heard that rosemary keeps bugs away! Luckily we don’t get to many where we live. This is a lovely diy. So simple and easy plus very beautiful! Thanks for sharing Jess!!

This is so pretty!! I absolutely love rosemary. I make a lot of dishes incorporating rosemary, as well as a yummy rosemary syrup I mix into my cocktails. It smells so great and is easy to grow! Your parents are so lucky to be able to grow a garden year round. I really love the idea of these simple, organic place cardsβgreat job!

Thanks Vic!! I’m glad you like them, I had so much, I needed to do something with it! lol! I love the scent of rosemary! When it dries and the leaves fall off, the stem still makes for lovely because it STILL smells of rosemary! My mom has a bouquet of only stems outside by the washer/dryer! lol Love to you my dear! xoxo <33333

Thanks so much Jane! I think the bug thing really works! We live in the mountains so we get our share of bugs around, but when I was home, I only saw one!! π

I used to be good at growing rosemary but for some reason my plant died this year. It’s probably sick of being moved from pillar to post π

Aw I’m sorry, Jade! Fortunately, it is pretty easy to grow, so you can just start over! π

this is SO pretty. I love the idea of using a fresh herb like rosemary. It does smell amazing and pairs well with most meats so I can imagine the smell in the air. =)

This is so brilliant, Jessica! Love love love everything about this. The rosemary, your handlettering, this diy–perfect! I love rosemary too. One time I tried putting fresh ones in a mushroom soup and I loved the scent so much that I put even more of it in there. The result? Smelled amazing, tasted…not so amazing. lol!
